The Hockey High School in Luleå has a long tradition of developing young male players into elite players at senior level. Good examples of this are Linus Omark, Johan Harju, and Anders Nilsson, who have all made their mark in the SHL and also reached the NHL. But also Isac Lundeström and Nils Lundkvist, who were selected in the first round in the summer of 2018 and have a bright future ahead of them. In Luleå, up to 14 players can be admitted each year to the Elite Hockey High School, which is run by Luleå Gymnasieskola in collaboration with Luleå Hockey. Students who are admitted in this way are given the opportunity to play and train with Luleå Hockey or another club to the extent and at the level that best benefits the student's hockey development.

NIU requires an athletic selection process in addition to the standard application for upper secondary school programs. As an athletic student, you will attend an "athletic class" within the economics program, natural sciences program, or social sciences program.

If you are accepted at NIU, you can choose to study the Child and Leisure Program, the Economics Program, the Natural Sciences Program, or the Social Sciences Program.

If you are accepted to Riksbasketgymnasium, you are entitled to apply for all programs at Luleå Gymnasieskola, but the best chance of getting a sports-friendly schedule is within the four programs that are relevant to NIU, as they are specially adapted for combining sports with studies.

As a student at LIU, you will study 200 credits in your sport through two courses of your individual choice. Local sports education can be applied for through the four programs BF, EK, NA, and SA.

Unlike NIU or RIG, there is no athletic selection process for LIU. Instead, you apply to one of the above programs through the 4-kantens gymnasieval system, where you compete based on your grades.

Applying to Luleå Elite Sports High School is a two-step process. First, in the fall of 2022, you must apply to a sports association or special sports federation and be accepted. Second, you must apply to a high school program (during the period January-February or during the re-election period April-May). Please note! You must be accepted into a sports program for your application to a program at Umeå Elite Sports High School to be valid.
