If you are a reserve:

QUESTION:

If I have been placed as a reserve athlete in an NIU program at a high school, how do I proceed with my high school selection?

ANSWER:
If you have chosen to keep your place at NIU, you should apply for the program/school as your first choice. Otherwise, you may be admitted to NIU but have chosen another school and program where you cannot combine NIU with your studies and will then have to give up sports. There is no coordination based on this, as there are two different application processes. If you are accepted into your first choice, all subsequent choices will be deleted. This also applies if you are accepted into your second choice and become a reserve for your first choice, but the remaining choices below will be deleted. Hopefully, however, you will receive a response regarding NIU before the final application deadline in May and will then have time to change your choices if necessary.

If you are not admitted to NIU:

QUESTION:
What happens if you have a school with NIU as your first choice but don't get into NIU?
ANSWER:

Since admission to NIU and to upper secondary school programs is done separately, you can be admitted to the school (the program and specialization you applied for) if your merit value/grade point average is sufficient, even if you are not admitted to NIU. However, it is the high school admissions office that can give you a 100% correct answer, as they are the ones who handle the administration of high school admissions.

NIU without authorization

QUESTION:

Can you apply and be accepted to NIU if, for example, you don't have a grade in English and therefore have to apply to PRIV?

According to the Education Act, an individual program shall prepare students for studies in a national or specially designed program and may be focused on a national or specially designed program, program-oriented individual program, PRIV.
ANSWER:

You submit a separate application to NIU and then apply to a high school program (in other words, you submit two separate applications).

Applications to NIU must be submitted early, with the deadline sometimes as early as October. However, it is not until early June that you will know whether you are eligible for the national upper secondary school program. Therefore, we recommend that you submit your application to NIU in a timely manner. Then you will find out whether you have been accepted into the "sports section," NIU.

You must be eligible for national upper secondary school programs. Otherwise, you cannot be admitted. In English, you can apply for and receive an exemption, i.e., be exempted from the requirement of a passing grade in English.

The majority of elite athletes did not attend sports high schools.

A sports high school is not a prerequisite for winning medals. Most of Sweden's most successful athletes took a different path to the elite, according to a study. In most sports, it is possible to combine elite training with studies at a sports high school. Young people who choose RIG (National Sports High School) or NIU (Nationally Approved Sports Education) have the opportunity to focus more on their sport and train during the day. Some move far from home to try to maximize their development. But those who have been rejected for RIG or NIU need not despair.

Differences between sports

Many of the medalists have attended sports high schools. However, more than half, 54 percent, did not, according to the study. The same distribution applies to those in the very top echelons of the world elite. The results do not mean that the same applies to all sports and all individuals. In some sports, it may be necessary to attend a sports high school in order to succeed. Some sports require specific conditions, such as alpine skiing. Some training environments may also be more central than others.
