More about Playing College Hockey

NCAA stands for National Collegiate Athletic Association. It is a member-driven organization that governs intercollegiate athletics in three divisions (I, II, and III). Today, the NCAA consists of 1,098 colleges and universities and 102 athletic conferences.
There are 60 NCAA Division 1 hockey teams spread across the Northeast and Upper Midwest of the United States. Each team competes in one of six conferences: Atlantic Hockey, Big 10, ECAC, Hockey East, NCHC, and WCHA.
Hockey coaches spend an incredible amount of time and energy scouting and recruiting potential student athletes. Scouts rate players for skating, size, game sense, character, and skill. But if any of these attributes catch a scout's eye, you still have to make sure he likes what he sees over an extended period of time.

As a player, you can contact schools and teams yourself and perhaps even visit different schools at your own expense. However, it can be more difficult to sell yourself and get a good response from teams if you are alone in the process.

If you are going to play college hockey, you are not allowed to have an agent. However, you are allowed to have an advisor, or "family advisor" as it is often called.

The basic rule is that you are not allowed to play with professional players because it will "infect" you as an amateur.

College Hockey Leagues

  • NCAA

    NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association)

The NCAA is the largest college sports league in the United States. It is the governing body for more than 1,200 schools, divided into three different divisions. Which division a school belongs to depends on many different factors and is not based on the school's athletic level.

    Division 1: 57 teams in 7 conferences
    Division 2: 200 teams in 12 conferences
    Division 3: 140 teams in 10 conferences.pp-list-container .pp-list-items

  • NAIA

NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics)

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics is the governing body for lesser-known collegiate sports programs that use athletics to promote desirable character traits among student bodies. This body sets rules for college sports so that they do not interfere with students' studies. They also place a high value on academic success. What's more, there are approximately 19 different NAIA schools in Indiana.
  • NJCAA

NJCAA (National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association)

This league allows athletes to compete for their school for two years while attending college or university. When they make the switch, they also switch to the NCAA or NAIA. Today, there are approximately 1,000 schools affiliated with this junior league.

College Hockey Age

Frequently asked questions: what is the age limit for college hockey?

Daniel Ljung: agent/advisor and founder of Scandinavian Hockey Consulting explains

  • Can players play college hockey if they play in the SHL?

When it comes to games in the SHL and Hockeyallsvenskan, the NCAA ALWAYS applies a "case-by-case" principle. As is well known, there are two parameters that players must meet before being awarded a player license via the NCAA Eligibility Center.
  • The parameters are:

    • 1. You must meet the requirement for an approved grade point average in the correct number of core subjects combined with SAT/ACT test results.
    • 2. You must meet the "amateur status" requirement. This means that you have not played in professional leagues, have no contracts, etc.
    • 3. This means that it is prohibited to play in professional leagues such as the SHL and Hockeyallsvenskan.
    • 4. In that case, a player becomes even less attractive for having played matches in the SHL/HA with the 60 NCAA D1 teams.
    • 5. NCAA rules are written for the American system, not the Swedish one. Therefore, as a Swede, you need to be well-informed and knowledgeable.
  • NCAA

    NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association)

The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) gives you five years to compete in four seasons athletically, with the fifth year being a redshirt year. A redshirt year allows athletes to sit out a competitive year (for reasons such as injury or competition for playing time) and still compete athletically for all four years.
  • NAIA

NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics)

The NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) has no age restrictions; however, they do remove competition seasons for any participation in sports at a comparable competitive level after September 1 of your high school graduation year.
