Ice hockey at the upper secondary school in Gävle got off to a flying start in 2000/2001 and is the result of a successful collaboration between Brynäs IF and the upper secondary schools in Gävle. The upper secondary school is for players who want to pursue ice hockey at an elite level while also graduating with good grades. The high school program is called National Sports Education (NIU).

Today, National Sports Education in combination with ice hockey in Gävle is an elite sports activity. This means that the activities are authorized by the Swedish Ice Hockey Association. Students can choose from five programs that include sports education: Social Sciences, Business and Administration, Natural Sciences, Construction, and Technology.

Our sports education aims to enable you to combine your high school education with your interest in sports. You will be able to develop to your full potential based on your abilities, both in school, in sports, and as a person.

Studying sports education means that you have to take responsibility and plan your time to manage your studies alongside competitions and training camps.

Applying to Gävle Elite Sports High School is a two-step process. First, you must apply for a sport through the respective sports association and be accepted. Second, you must apply for a high school program (during the period January-February or during the re-election period April-May). Please note! You must be accepted into a sport for your application to a program at the Elite Sports High School to be valid.
