Talent or early maturity
During childhood and adolescence, children born early in the year may appear to be talented. It is therefore easy to mistake talent when you first see someone who is better than others in children's and youth series.
According to the study, what distinguishes early mature players from talented children is their own desire to train hard and their ability to endure a lot of training at a young age. According to the study, it is important to be motivated and train on your own alongside your own team, and it is important to play against older players who are a little more developed in their game in order to progress from young talent to senior level play.

The talent trap
If you call someone talented, they may end up only doing what they are good at and thus not developing other skills. This becomes a "trap" for the player because it solves the short-term problem but does not work in the long run. It creates a fear of failure, because if you are talented, you have to be the best and prove that you are talented. In the long run, the player risks only doing things they are good at and thus not developing their weaknesses or daring to fail. When conditions change (e.g., others catch up and develop, or the player changes teams), the "talent" will not be enough, and it is very common for the player to lose interest and quit ice hockey because they do not want to fail.
Something to consider
- We see that only a few players in the 14-15 age group will become the stars of the future. Most are at their best between the ages of 20 and 27.
- If you miss out on TV-pucken or don't get into your desired hockey high school, you still have a chance to become a pro. (A professional always takes responsibility for their results).
- All young hockey players develop differently as they enter puberty at different times.
- It's all about what you want and what you want to achieve.
